Before the 1980s, Zildjian offered one line of cymbals, what would eventually be know as the A series and, while more amplified music was on the come, other types music still existed, categorized as jazz, funk, disco, fusion, jazz/rock, latin, sing/songwriter, easy listening; all vaild art forms. And Zildjian offered ride cymbals in sizes other than a 20″ diameter. And many of these cymbals were great in their own right, needing only a little more emphasis from Zildjian to bolster their sales over their wimpy, less musical 20″ counterparts!
Enter this 22″ Zildjian Light Ride cymbal, from the late 1970s…
While Buddy reportedly played the 20″ version of this weight of cymbal, this size is hands down better!
For your consideration and from those halcyon days of the late 1970s, a 22″ Zildjian Light ride cymbal, which features the telltale hollow logo on the underneath side with only the words “LIGHT RIDE” on the top surface and weighs in at a scintilatingly bendable thin 2580 grams.
This is a versatile cymbal, wavy thin, which Zildjian offered for a very brief time, discontinuing it in the early 1980s. When in production, Zildjian described this cymbal as “A low-pitched ride. Produces a light mellow, shimmering sound. Recommended for soft, subtle, laid back music.”
Fine, Zildjian. But here’s what I have to say “Very musical with great bell size and characteristics making playing patterns easy and clear. When played with a nylon tip stick, the deep taper provides a nice ping yet the lighter weight offers itself to be somewhat crashable.”
But that’s okay, Zildjian…keep punching out those 20″ Medium and Ping ride cymbals while ignoring reality.
And this Zildjian 22″ Light Ride cymbal has that incredible wave to the edges and a nice “vintage Zildjian patina” which has befriended it down throught the decades! You could clean it but I wouldn’t. I would let all of the previous years mojo speak while I drove the next band I’m playing in.
The condition of this cymbal would be described as used with a few flaws which would be the tape residue on the underneath side, a very slight keyhole which can only be seen on the underneath side of the bell and an arc on the top side the bell which is in the cymbal itself, most likely caused by a metal washer used on top of the felt while the cymbal was tilted at an extreme angle.
Yes, you could go plunk down 449.95 for a new, never been touched 22″ Medium Ride cymbal but it would not have the vibe, the sound, the mojo of this cymbal.
