Back in the days of the late 1960s and early 1970s and even up through the mid-1980s, if you played in a band which produced great volume, whether acoustic or amplified, you needed a big, bold ride cymbal which defined the syncopations of the beat for everyone in that band, whether it might be a lead trumpet player, bari saxophone or a guitar player. This cymbal makes a simple and bold statement and the backs it up and that statement is, “HERE IS WHERE THE TIME BEGINS AND ENDS. DON’T LIKE IT? TOO BAD! THE GUY PLAYING THIS CYMBAL IS WHERE THE TIME IS. DEAL WITH IT!” 20″ ride cymbals with undersized bells need not apply!
And if you were a ground breaking drummer such as Neil Peart, Vinnie Colaiuta, Stewart Copeland, Billy Cobham or Phil Collins, this was your ride cymbal! And this still rings true today, in any high volume musical situation you might find yourself in!
For your consideration, a VINTAGE 1960s 3 DOT STAMP 22” ZILDJIAN PING-Y RIDE CYMBAL, weighing in at 3515 grams.
And this band driving monster is in GREAT CONDITION, possessing the 3 DOT STAMP, typically found on the Zildjians produced in the 1960s. This is a prime example of the pre-PING RIDE, PING RIDE. It’s freaking AWESOME! No wimpy 20”Ping Ride with its tiny little bell, here! This cymbal has a nice shine and has the more “handmade” look of the Zildjian cymbal, due mostly to the lathing. A five decade old cymbal, it has signs of use such as stick marks, fingerprints, tarnish spots and the like. This cymbal has no cracks, chips but does have a slight keyhole. Nevertheless, it’s ready to become the statement maker in your arsenal!
This cymbal is truly a joy to play! It has a nice tone to it without being to harsh and being from the 1960s, it is a little warmer and darker than the later Zildjians! Check out the video if you haven’t already!
This is the ride cymbal of “Tom Sawyer” “Red Barchetta” and “Spirit of Radio”.
The is the driving bell sound Vinnie Colaiuta used on the Tom Scott Flashpoint CD, with tunes such as “Get a Grip” “Down to the Wire” and “Coast to Coast”.
This is the sound of Stewart Copeland when he recorded the drum parts for “Message in a Bottle” “Can’t Stand Losing You” and “Roxanne”.
This model was a top pick by the great drum explorer Billy Cobham in the late 1970s.
And it was a favorite of Phil Collins, when he endorsed Zildjian cymbals.
Makes me want to grab the vinyl, clean the needle and just listen for a couple of hours with the KOSS headphones on!
These top drummers chose this model to drive their respective bands and careers to the very top of the music food chain and it’s ideal for driving even that Big Band!
Yes, you could go out and buy a brand new, never been hit 20” Ping Ride right off the shelf and it would be a high quality, precision made musical instrument. But you’d also be getting far less of a cymbal for the $299.95 you will be spending!
Do yourself a solid and spend a little less to get 3 times the cymbal, far better and more versatile than the 20” model, right here and, right now with that vintage sound and vibe already present!
